Preserving the Past for the People

Our Mission

Edwards Franklin HouseOur purpose is to preserve the history and culture of Surry County and interpret it to the community.

Our business is to preserve and maintain historic sites with research, programs, publishing, collection of documents and photographs, the identification, cataloging and labeling of sites, maintenance of archives, and cooperation with other organizations.

Our heritage and community values are worth saving and passing along. We are dedicated to the integrity and accuracy of research and documentation, and to enabling people to appreciate what life in the past was like.

Brower Mill BridgeWe wish to address and prevent the missing of the local history by our children, the neglect and loss of sites, and any ignorance of local traditions and history.

What makes us unique is our interest in local history, our promotion of scholarship and investigation, our interpretation of history in authentic period settings, and our leadership in Surry County in identifying and preserving historical sites.

We do this to benefit future generations, visitors and their patrons, interested citizens, teachers and their students, and all people with roots in Surry County.
